What does the support of a prominent politician say about a person? Does it reflect their principles or lack of them? Does it show their knowledge or lack of it? Does it indicate their intelligence or lack of it? Does it reveal their character or lack of it?
If an important politician like a president, member of congress, or governor has an extensive public record of being a liar, a cheat, and a con what does that say about the person who supports them? If this same politician has a well-publicized record of cruelty, corruption, and narcissism, what does that say about the person who supports them? If this same politician has a long list of failed businesses, bankruptcies, and court cases what does that say about the person who supports them? If this same politician has a history of disgusting public statements, associations, and practices, what does that say about the person who supports them?
It is obvious what it says. A person who supports such a politician either shares characteristics of that politician or they are ridiculously and inexcusably ignorant! A person cannot hide behind the defense of being ignorant. Insanity or stupidity maybe, but not ignorance.
So what is a man or woman to do about a friend, family member, or colleague who supports such a despicable politician who has, is, or could cause tremendous damage? Take a stand with them by clearly and concisely letting them know how you feel about the politician they are supporting and why it’s important. To limit defensiveness and closedmindedness, be as tactful and diplomatic as possible but firm. From there just be an example of the choices an intelligent, well-informed, and principled person makes.
If the politician they are supporting is doing horrific things to your country, like Trump has in the U.S., or in another country, like Putin has in Ukraine, I can not think of any good reason to continue to associate, socialize, or communicate with such a person even if they are a family member or friend. To be in their company and act like nothing is wrong would create serious conflicts in a person. This would be unhealthy in many ways.
I’ve had to make these difficult decisions myself with ignorant family members and friends. Some of these friends I’ve known for decades. I’ve come to the conclusion that although I’d help them if they were in trouble, I can not and will not socialize with them.
We can not take any responsibility for the decisions of others. We can only make smart ones ourselves, stand firm, and hopefully lead wayward individuals through our example.
